But at the same time, surgical interventions are associated with the risk of various, sometimes fatal, complications. One of the most dangerous is considered to be venous thromboembolism.

What is venous thromboembolism?

During surgery, the integrity of blood vessels and tissues is disrupted, causing bleeding. The body reacts to this by increasing blood clotting and forming clots. Bed rest after surgery and forced immobility lead to a slowdown in blood flow in the vessels. The result of these processes is the formation of blood clots.

Patients may experience both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE). In the second case, blood clots from the veins enter the vessels of the lungs. With obstruction (blockage) of large pulmonary arteries, a person can die in a matter of minutes.

What factors increase the risk of developing venous thromboembolic complications (VTEC)?

A significant provoking factor is the surgical intervention itself and the resulting state of hypercoagulation (increased blood clotting), although phlebectomy (removal of varicose veins) does not belong to operations with a high risk of VTEC. The second significant factor is bed rest, immobility.

Also, the likelihood of venous thromboembolism increases in patients:

  • over 40 years old;
  • taking hormonal drugs (estrogens) or other drugs that affect blood clotting;
  • with obesity, varicose veins of the extremities, cancer, infection;
  • with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism in the past.

How to prevent thromboembolic complications?

The choice of prevention method depends on the patient's condition, individual characteristics and concomitant diseases. For patients with a high risk of VTEC, surgeons may prescribe special blood thinning medications - anticoagulants. But they have their drawbacks - for example, the likelihood of bleeding.

Hospital anti-embolic hosiery is considered a safer and at the same time more effective means for preventing thromboembolic complications.

How does hospital anti-embolic hosiery work?

Hospital anti-embolic hosiery is a compression stocking or knee-high that creates graduated compression (18-21 mm Hg) on the walls of the veins and tissues of the legs. It is most pronounced in the ankle area and decreases towards the knee and thigh. Due to the pressure of the anti-embolic hosiery, the lumen of the vessels narrows, the blood is pushed upward (towards the heart) and the valve apparatus of the veins works more efficiently.

Such stockings and knee-highs are called hospital because they are used when the patient is in the hospital and are designed to create the necessary compression in the lying position.

To prevent VTEC during operations on varicose veins of the lower leg, doctors recommend prophylactic anti-embolic knee-highs with a control hole under the toes.

Features of prophylactic anti-embolic stockings

Anti-embolic stockings are 70% nylon and 30% lycra. This allows them to create the necessary graduated compression on the leg tissue and vein walls. There is a special hole under the toes so that the doctor can assess the blood flow in the lower extremities without removing the stockings. The white color of the product allows you to monitor the condition of the suture (if surgery was performed on the veins).

Preventive anti-embolic stockings with a control hole under the toes are available in five sizes (S, M, L, XL and XXL), due to which they are securely held on the legs and can be used to prevent VTEC in men and women.
