Cramps are sudden spontaneous contractions of the muscles. They can occur in the leg, arm, neck and other parts of the body. Such a spasm is always accompanied by severe pain, sometimes intolerable, and it can last from a few seconds to tens of minutes.
Causes of cramps are diverse:- lack of useful trace elements in the body - potassium and magnesium, B vitamins;
- pregnancy;
- sedentary lifestyle or, conversely, excessive physical activity;
- sudden movements that cause muscle stretching and then their spasm;
- endocrinological diseases - for example, obesity and diabetes mellitus;
- orthopedic problems - flat feet;
- taking medications that remove trace elements (especially potassium) from the body - for example, diuretics.
However, there is another pathology in which leg cramps are very common - almost 90% of people. This is varicose veins of the lower limbs.
