Medical compression sleeve – features of choice

While compression stockings and knee-highs are familiar to most people, few know about medical compression sleeves. This is due to the fact that chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins of the legs are much more common. But there are certain problems and diseases that require compression hosiery for the arms.

What is a compression sleeve?

A compression sleeve is a medical device whose main purpose is to compress the soft tissues of the arm and improve venous outflow. It can be used to prevent and treat many diseases that are accompanied by arm swelling and lymph congestion. A medical compression sleeve restores normal blood circulation in the upper limb, improves venous return to the heart and accelerates rehabilitation after severe injuries and surgeries.

Depending on the compression class of the sleeve, it can be used in sports, after removal of mammary glands with axillary lymph nodes or radiation therapy, in case of injuries, venous thrombosis and severe burns with scarring.

What types of compression sleeves are there?

Most often, medical compression sleeves are produced in two compression classes - 18-21 mm Hg and 23-32 mm Hg. The first class is usually used to prevent venous and lymphatic edema, and the second - to treat them (although it can also be used to prevent them if there is a high risk of such complications).

In sports, compression sleeves of the "zero" class are most often used. Their main tasks are to fix muscles and soft tissues, redistribute the load, and protect against injury. You can choose the right sports model yourself, but if you need a medical product of the first or second compression class, only a doctor can do this.

Surgeons and oncologists in their practice more often use compression sleeves of the second compression class, which are indispensable after complex surgeries or radiation therapy.

Please note: lymphostasis, which occurs after removal of a tumor (cancer) of the mammary gland, is associated with the fact that surgeons simultaneously remove "packets" of lymph nodes on the corresponding side of the body. This measure is necessary to prevent the spread of metastases. But, unfortunately, it disrupts the normal outflow of lymph, the arm quickly begins to swell and over time, a serious disease may even develop - elephantiasis of the upper limb.

Features of Lauma Medical compression sleeves

Lauma Medical produces medical sleeves that create graduated compression – 23-32 mm Hg and can be used both for the prevention and treatment of lymphatic edema of the upper extremities.

The main therapeutic effects of Lauma Medical compression sleeves:

  • “squeezing” fluid out of the soft tissues of the arm and returning it back to the vascular bed;
  • acceleration of venous outflow (towards the heart);
  • normalization of blood circulation in the arm;
  • reduction of its swelling.

Lauma Medical medical sleeves are made of nylon (60%) and lycra (40%) and are available in two types – with and without a glove. Models with a glove are suitable for patients with severe swelling, which extends to the hand. In addition, the glove provides additional fixation of the product. A compression sleeve without a glove is the optimal solution for moderate lymphostasis. It effectively combats hand swelling and is virtually invisible under clothing.
