Medical elastic bandage - reliable fixation of joints and ligaments in case of injuries

Injuries to ligaments and joints are inevitable for athletes. However, they can also occur in normal people - for example, when a leg is turned, sudden movements or an unfortunate fall. Proper treatment determines the length of the recovery period and the future function of the joint.

What are the most common injuries?

The most common injuries are bruises and sprains. But people rarely seek medical attention for mild to moderate pain, so trauma surgeons are more likely to encounter ligament tears, sprains and fractures.

Common injuries to athletes include:

  • sprains of the ligaments of the ankle joint, Achilles tendon, wrist;
  • damage to the anterior and posterior cruciate and collateral ligaments of the knee, as well as its menisci;
  • “tennis elbow” (elbow tendon damage).

Basic methods of treating injuries

The first step in any injury is to anesthetize and rest the injured joint, tendon or ligament. The less the limb moves, the easier the discomfort will be. For pain relief, traumatologists recommend analgesics in injections, and cooling with ice can be used as first aid.
Different methods are used to fix the injured area. If the limb needs to be completely immobilized (immobilized) in case of a fracture, only a plaster cast is suitable. For lighter injuries, doctors use a medical elastic bandage

What is elastic bandaging for?

With any trauma, swelling forms in the area of the injury, which increases pain and limits the mobility of the joint. Inflammation also develops and progresses rapidly. The accumulated tissue fluid presses on vessels and nerves, disrupting blood circulation and aggravating symptoms.

Applying a medical elastic bandage creates compression on the damaged tissue, which reduces swelling, restores microcirculation and relieves pain. In addition, the medical bandage provides elastic fixation - it protects the joint from stress, but at the same time maintains a certain range of motion, which is necessary for rapid recovery.

The use of a medical elastic bandage is part of the PRICE protocol for trauma:

  • Protection - protecting the injured area;
  • Rest - resting the limb;
  • Ice - cold, ice application;
  • Compression - moderate fixation compression with bandages;
  • Elevation - elevated position of the limb.

What kind of elastic bandage is used for injuries?

High-stretch medical elastic bandages (over 150%) are commonly used for sports and household injuries. Its advantages:

  • it is convenient to apply on joints (especially on the wrist and heel area);
  • compression is created on the tissues both during movements and at rest;
  • preserves a certain mobility of the joint, which is important for normal blood circulation and muscle function.

The composition of the medical elastic bandage is 96% cotton and 4% elastane, but due to the special weave of threads only natural fabrics are in contact with the skin, so patients do not notice sweating, chafing or other unpleasant sensations.

Can elastic bandages be used to prevent injuries?

Medical elastic bandage with a high degree of extensibility is widely used in sports medicine to prevent injuries to ligaments and joints. It does not restrain the movements of athletes, but prevents sprains, subluxations and dislocations. However, it is important to know that the bandage will not protect the joints from external injuries such as bruises, it can only soften them somewhat.
