What are low-stretch elastic bandages used for?

Many people know that elastic bandages are an indispensable thing for injuries, as well as in sports. But this is true for high-stretch bandages. They put pressure on tissues both at rest and during physical activity, but at the same time maintain a certain range of motion of the joint. However, there are also low-stretch elastic bandages, they are used in completely different situations.

What is a low-stretch elastic bandage?

As the name suggests, this bandage has little stretch. But it is precisely this low stretch that determines its main property – creating more pronounced compression during movement. At rest, it usually remains low.

How does a low-stretch bandage affect tissues:

  • improves the functioning of lymphatic vessels and, accordingly, the outflow of lymph;
  • reduces the formation and stagnation of tissue fluid;
  • due to compression, it “softens” dense edema;
  • improves the condition of the skin, prevents its trophic changes.

In what situations are low-stretch elastic bandages used?

Low-stretch elastic bandages are widely used in surgery and phlebology - for example, before and after surgery, with lymphedema (dense lymphatic edema), varicose veins (especially in advanced stages of the disease).

In addition, plastic surgery cannot do without them - the tight compression created by the bandage prevents the appearance of edema and maintains the desired shape of tissues in the postoperative period.

The main indications for the use of low-stretch elastic bandages in plastic surgery:

  • support of skin and tissues after liposuction;
  • correct tissue fusion and prevention of coarse scars;
  • reduction of hematomas;
  • control of edema - low-stretch bandages prevent fluid accumulation in tissues, which is especially important during rhinoplasty, mammoplasty, rhinoplasty and other surgical interventions;
  • preventing uncontrolled tissue stretching and accelerating their recovery.

Please note: postoperative edema can significantly worsen the result of surgical intervention. It changes the shape of tissues, disrupts their normal healing, and also causes inflammation and pain, sometimes very severe. But the most important thing is that the capabilities of drugs in case of severe postoperative edema are very limited (unlike low-stretch elastic bandages, which are truly irreplaceable in this situation).

How to use elastic bandage after plastic surgery?

An elastic bandage is a medical device, so after plastic surgery it can only be used as prescribed by a doctor. It is very important that it provides the necessary compression, but at the same time does not squeeze the tissue too much - excessive pressure on the vessels and nerves will only worsen the situation.

In the first weeks after surgery, low-stretch bandages are usually worn constantly, removing the bandages only during hygiene procedures. As recovery progresses, the time of wearing the bandages decreases. Bandages are removed only as prescribed by a doctor.

Please note: low-stretch elastic bandages are universal - they can be used after surgery on the face, chest or abdomen.
