Which compression stockings should you choose if you are overweight?

Excess weight is a common problem caused by a sedentary lifestyle and the growing popularity of fast food. This is also facilitated by increased stress levels, which force many people to "eat away" anxiety and depression. But excess weight is not only an aesthetic problem, it is a metabolic disorder, high blood pressure, fluctuations in blood sugar levels, and excessive strain on the veins of the lower extremities.

How does excess weight affect leg veins?

Doctors often warn that excess weight means hypertension, diabetes, arthrosis of the knee joints and varicose veins in the future. Of course, the listed diseases do not necessarily develop in an obese person, but their appearance after a few years is very likely. And the more body weight, the higher the risk of such diseases.

Excess weight significantly worsens blood circulation in the vessels of the lower extremities, due to which venous outflow (return of blood towards the heart) is disrupted. This leads to stagnation of fluid and increased pressure inside the veins themselves - venous hypertension. Such a reaction develops compensatory - it is necessary in order to still "push" the blood up.

But over time, the capabilities of the vessels are depleted. This leads to their overflow with blood and disruption of the venous valves, which further worsens the outflow of fluid. The veins begin to expand, and the result of these changes is varicose veins.

The second important risk factor for the development of varicose veins is a sedentary lifestyle. The less the leg muscles work, the harder it is for the veins to cope with fluid stagnation. And physical inactivity is a frequent companion and one of the main causes of obesity.

Why do you need compression hosiery if you are overweight?

Even if a person does not yet have obvious varicose veins, but there are risk factors (for example, excess weight), doctors recommend wearing compression hosiery when the load on the leg vessels increases.

You cannot do without medical underwear in such situations:

  • when standing for a long time or walking intensively;
  • when traveling (by car or bus);
  • during flights.

Please note: sedentary work is also a risk factor for the development of chronic venous insufficiency or varicose veins. And if by the end of the working day swelling and heaviness in the legs appear, it's time to think about compression underwear.

Which compression hosiery to choose?

To prevent the development of varicose veins and reduce mild swelling / fatigue of the legs, phlebologists recommend wearing medical compression stockings of class A - preventive. They exert light pressure on the tissues (10-17 mm Hg), but at the same time effectively prevent fluid stagnation in the legs and improve the functioning of the veins.

Lauma Medical produces special TRAVEL compression stockings - with a thickened heel and toe. They are made of nylon (76%) and lycra (24%). Due to the composition and reinforced toe and heel areas, such knitwear effectively performs its function (exerts graduated pressure on the legs) and serves for a long time. And the size grid (M - XXL) allows you to choose medical underwear for a person of any build.

TRAVEL compression stockings do not squeeze the shin in the upper part and do not squeeze the arteries and nerves. When used correctly, they are comfortable and safe, and do not cause discomfort in the legs or sweating. Doctors recommend putting on compression stockings in the morning (when there is no swelling in the legs) and wearing them during the day when doing sedentary/standing work, or using them as needed (for example, during a flight).
